Elevator layouts become expensive to change once cores, structure, and net floor areas are fixed. Early traffic work gives the project team time to challenge the lift proposal while the drawings can still move.
The real cost of deciding late
An elevator decision affects more than the equipment schedule. It sets shaft dimensions, pit and headroom coordination, lobby geometry, structural openings, electrical demand, and the amount of usable floor area. If performance is checked only after these elements are committed, the project may face a choice between compromised service and disruptive redesign.
Start with demand, not a standard arrangement
Two buildings with the same floor count may need different lift solutions. Population density, entrance distribution, tenant patterns, floor heights, accessibility needs, and service traffic all influence the result. A familiar arrangement can be a sensible starting point, but it should not become the conclusion before the demand has been tested.
Compare options without losing the assumptions
A clear option study might compare four smaller cars with three larger cars, or conventional control with destination control. Record the same population and traffic pattern for each option, then show both the passenger result and the physical consequence. That makes the discussion useful to architects, cost consultants, developers, and lift suppliers—not only traffic specialists.
Where space can be protected
Traffic analysis does not automatically reduce the number of shafts. It helps the team see where capacity is genuinely needed and where another intervention may work: revised zoning, a different car size, improved door performance, a separate service lift strategy, or a better distribution of entrance demand.
A practical decision record
- State the population source and traffic period.
- List equipment and timing assumptions.
- Show the option differences on a plan, not only in a results table.
- Record the selected option and why its trade-offs were accepted.
- Revisit the study when occupancy or the core layout changes materially.
